Building the Civic DataScape

Description of the granted funding

Data portals, especially those that contain open data, are often intended for use by the general public. But these portals are commonly difficult to use and fail to provide adequate support for finding relevant data, especially for users who are not data professionals. This project aims to develop a DataScape concept that provides improved representations of data sets and easier to use interfaces that make it easier to frame queries that return data relevant for specific problems of the end-user. It has a further aim to bring into sharper focus the relationship between data and 'place' and to support collaborative activities around data. In this way, data can be used by communities and those who are collecting data, for example as part of citizen science or participatory sensing, can more easily participate and lend their local knowledge and expertise to its interpretation.
