PIXIE - Plausibility Paradoxes in Scaled-Down Virtual Reality

Description of the granted funding

The objective of this project is to gather scientific understanding of mismatches between human perception and expectations and realistic physics representations in scaled-down Virtual Reality (VR) experiences viewed with an HMD. These mismatches are expected to occur when humans are exposed to various physical phenomena. The impact of these mismatches is expected to increase the further the human is from regular scale. The scientific knowledge for the project is acquired through human subject studies that are carried out using interactive VR experiences, where the user is scaled-down from the 1st person perspective in three orders of magnitude. This understanding is then used to identify factors that need to be addressed in training humans for scaled-down VR and designing scaled-down VR and telepresence systems. Application areas include, for example, virtual prototyping, medical VR and teleoperation.
