Aberrant clonal T cell proliferations in patients with hematopoietic stem cell transplantation
Description of the granted funding
Hematopoietic stem cell transplantation is an important treatment for many leukemias and also for non-malignant diseases. Post-transplant complications, including graft-vs-host disease (transplanted cells attack against body's other tissues) and defective immune system recovery remain major clinical challenges. Patients are mainly treated with drugs that suppress the immune system causing significant short- and long-term side effects. In this project, we will study the patient's immune system after stem cell transplantation and focus specifically on T cells. We investigate whether the T-cells have acquired mutations that may cause their abnormal function. In addition, we aim to identify the potential target antigen for each T cell by their surface receptor expression. By combining these findings with clinical data, we hope to be able to better identify post-transplant complications in the future and thereby provide more targeted therapies.
