The Baltic Sea Region and the Post-Cold War Hysteresis. Security conceptions and practices in transition (BALTRANS)

Description of the granted funding

Recent developments have made clear that ghosts from the past still cast a negative shadow on the current state of relations between the West and Russia. Focusing on the making of the foreign and security policies of Finland and the Baltic states in the 1990s, the project's aim is to revisit the post-Cold War period as an amalgamation of (lost) promises for regional transition, novel security imaginaries and the burden of inherited ideas and habits and as a period of memory political contestation. The focus is on the evolution of novel ideational and conceptual spaces for understanding the dynamics of regional and international order as well as the concept of security itself; institutional arrangements touching upon Northern Europe and the Baltic Sea region in the 1990s and the making of the post-Cold War foreign and security policies of Finland and the Baltic countries.
