Mitochondrial metabolism at cross-roads of nervous system health and disease
Description of the granted funding
Our project proposal aims to clarify novel active roles of mitochondrial signaling in modifying whole-cellular metabolic environment and behavior in different nervous system cell populations, in maintenance of nervous system homeostasis, upon stress and disease. The project stems from internationally leading research and expertise of the applicant in mitochondrial physiology and disease, and applies the group's novel data of whole-cellular stress responses to ask questions of stress responses in the brain. The project has high potential to provide breakthroughs in multiple disciplines: novel fundamental knowledge in mitochondrial- and neurobiology concerning stress responses and metabolic signaling, in neurodegenerative diseases of primary and secondary mitochondrial origin and in identification of novel treatment targets affecting the retina or the brain.
