Disability & Dignity

Description of the granted funding

The objective of this research is to unravel law's assumptions of disability and dignity and how they are reflected in the lives of persons with disabilities (PwDs). This is done by carrying out a philosophical analysis of these core concepts and, against this background, by researching legislation concerning welfare services for disabled persons and their families. In addition, the effects of legislation on the lives of PwDs are assessed. In the theoretical part we aim to develop a conception of dignity that is closely related to the concept of autonomy without, however, thereby excluding PwDs. In the empirical part the project employs a life course approach: we study what kind of legal challenges PwDs face at different stages of theis lives. In this way we avoid treating PwDs as a single homogeneous group.
