Bridging Magnons
Description of the granted funding
Magnonics is an emerging field of magnetism studying the physics of spin waves (collective spin excitations in a magnetic material). Spin waves can effectively carry and process microwave signals at gigahertz frequencies. Current telecommunication technology uses bulky microwave processing components as they utilize microwave radiation with millimeter wavelengths. Magnonics holds a promise to scale down microwave processing devices by a factor 1000. To successfully use magnonics in signal processing tasks, basic building blocks of magnonic circuitry need to be developed. The 'Bridging Magnons' project combines the fields of magnonics and micromechanics for on-chip integration of new device functionalities at room temperature. By the end of the project, two prototype devices will be demonstrated: a magnon amplifier and a tunable magnon source.
