Prediagnostic early synaptic disturbances in neurodegenerative diseases

Description of the granted funding

SynaDeg project aims to identify prediagnostic early synaptic and other physiological disturbances, including those in behaviour, activity, and sleep, which can be easily measured even at home, in frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB). Synaptic alterations in patients will be assessed by transcranial magnetic stimulation. Moreover, cerebrospinal fluid, blood, and skin samples will be obtained from the patients for the discovery of disease-specific synaptic biomarkers and generation of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neuronal models for molecular mechanistic studies. SynaDeg is expected to deepen our understanding of disease mechanisms in FTD and DLB and to yield novel disease-specific biofluid or physiological biomarkers and clinical tools to help early diagnosis and treatment of the patients. SynaDeg partner research groups come from Finland, Sweden, Germany, and Spain.
