Molecular and functional neural basis of musical emotions
Description of the granted funding
The goal of this project is to reveal the neurochemical and functional basis of emotions evoked by music listening and music making. The project addresses this issue by combining positron emission tomography (PET), pharmacological functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), and machine learning. The main questions posed the project are: 1) Does listening to pleasurable music and joint music making engage the endogenous opioid system 2) How are different music-induced emotional states represented in the brain? 3) How does music-listening affect the temporal dynamics of brain metabolism. The project will provide the first direct neuroimaging evidence regarding the role of the opioid system in music-induced emotions elucidate the relationship between music-induced and other emotions.
