Photonic Inks formulated by Hemicellulose Block Copolymers and Cellulose Nanocrystals: 3D Printable Structural Colour (HemiColour)
Description of the granted funding
Colour is a visual appearance. People use colour to express and sense decoration, information, as well as emotion in daily life. Colour appearance originates from the adsorption, reflection, scattering, or emission of light when it hits objects or materials. Nature provides us brilliant and vibrant colours in plants and insects, etc. Cellulose, a biomass component, can align in a periodical manner functioning as so-called structural colour. Within this frame, HemiColour aims to implement side-stream polysaccharide from Finnish forestry industry for obtaining structural colouration. Together with cellulose nanomaterials, HemiColour has a strong desire to produce a new type of bio-based photonic inks for rapid prototyping to replace the organic colourants for a sustainable life. HemiColour has a strong urge to turn wastes to treasures for future sustainable material development and promoting circular bioeconomy.
