Description of the granted funding
Forest fertilization offers rapid climate change mitigation through enhanced carbon (C) sequestration and wood production in boreal uplands and peatlands, but may have adverse effects on greenhouse gas emissions, nutrient export and biodiversity. We provide novel tools and means for precision management, which with tailored precision fertilization schemes boosts sustainable C sequestration and wood production. We will combine open data and current knowledge into a spatially distributed Precision Nutrient Management Model. Using the model and drone-based hyperspectral imaging, we will identify potential locations for precision fertilization. We will use simulations and optimization to define environmentally sustainable and economically feasible precision forest management from stand to landscape scales under changing climate. Our research provides a significant renewal in the science-based management of natural resources under a changing operative environment.
