Description of the granted funding
Leg4Life is a joint project of the University of Helsinki, Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare and Natural Resources Institute Finland, which aims to promote the transition to a climate-neutral food system. This is pursued by diversifying and increasing the cultivation, processing and use of plant protein sources from primary production to the consumer's table, while simultaneously taking into account the resulting environmental and health impacts. The project focuses on legumes that thrive in Finnish climatic conditions, such as pea, faba bean and lupins. The project studies and promotes legume-supported primary production, promotes development of tasty and healthy legume-based products for use by both food services and individual consumers and examines the impact of increasing legume production and use on human nutrition and health, society, the economy, and the environment. The data generated by the project is used to model the overall change effects of sustainability.
