Bio-oils based polymeric composites; value chain from synthesis to additive manufacturing
Description of the granted funding
The materials and chemicals sector currently relies on a linear, fossil-based economy. Instead, a transition from carbon-release towards recycling, use of biomass and carbon capturing should be promoted. Circularity and sustainability of plastics is a systemic challenge that requires a dialogue between multidisciplinary experts to build functional solutions and develop the needed transition paths. In ValueBioMat we identify sustainable raw materials and, by conducting life cycle assessments, we create novel solutions that ensure resource efficient production of innovative and sustainable materials. An example of this is merging bio-based polymers with emerging digital manufacturing technologies. Furthermore, we estimate how new business models can structure the industry's value creating activities to leverage bio- and circular economy and we evaluate how regulation and policies can incentivize and guide consumers and stakeholders toward more sustainable paths.
