Harvesting solar PV data for improved meteorology (Harvest)

Description of the granted funding

Solar panels are becoming strongly to complement our energy systems both in Finland and globally. However, there are especially local challenges connected to them in that role namely shading by the trees and inexact orientation information. On the other hand, the network consisting of geographically distributed panels could be utilized to make the weather, especially cloudiness forecast more accurate for the next hours. In this project, we will start by solving local problems connected to solar panels by using Lidar-data, Google Street View data and satellite data. From that we will continue to utilization of the solar panel installations as ensemble and thereafter towards enhanced cloudiness forecast as well as more optimized energy system. The results of the project will benefit all those sectors that need more accurate weather forecast or which are connected to energy systems.
