Melanin-lipid drug delivery systems for ocular diseases (MELLI)

Description of the granted funding

In this project, for the first time, we will design and produce lipid coated melanin nanoparticles for drug delivery. Melanin is a natural pigment in our body. It binds several drug molecules efficiently and releases them with time. Melanin surface and biological interactions are poorly controlled. This can be improved with lipid coating, and the properties can be modified extensively. Even drug release at the specific location is possible. Our objective is to develop an efficient drug delivery system for difficult to treat ocular diseases, like retinoblastoma. The eye posterior segment diseases are also more and more common chronic problem among the ageing population. This causes significant reduction in quality of life and costs for the society. The developed drug delivery system is also widely applicable for other difficult to treat diseases, such as other cancer types.
