Generalized network representation methods for understanding polarization and group formation

Description of the granted funding

The analysis of social systems as networks has made detailed investigations of polarization within social networks possible. It has also lead to the understanding of mechanisms behind the groups that are formed and what holds them together. However, large parts of our understanding of such social network phenomena is based on overly simplistic assumptions about the basic elements of the networks. Recent theoretical advances and the increase in the amount of accurate large-scale network data has allowed more realistic network structures to be considered such as networks with multiple types of connections and networks of networks. The aim of this project is to take advantage of these advances, and develop new theoretical and computational tools to analyze groups and polarization in large-scale social networks.
