New Scaling Approach for Response and Failure of Ice in Model Testing (SCALE-MODEL)

Description of the granted funding

Model-scale testing is utilized to define the performance of structures and ships in the design phase as the numerical methods are under development due to the complex processes and prototyping is not possible. With current scaling approach and the experience of the ice tanks, the level ice performance of conventional ice breaking hull forms can be estimated satisfactorily. However, the current scaling method poses drawbacks and challenges for model-scale testing in ice with other type of hull forms and scope of testing. We propose a new material model to represent ice response and failure, and new scaling method to represent and interpret the behavior of ice between scales. The research consists of theoretical and experimental work and utilizes Aalto University Ice and Wave Tank. The research results are expected to widen the scope of model-scale testing in ice and enable the tackling of Sustainable Development Goals through improved designs and understanding of operations in ice.
