Geometric methods in elasticity

Description of the granted funding

This project in pure mathematics centers around problems arising from the mathematical models of elasticity theory. These models, which are based around understanding how an elastic material behaves under a deformation from one shape to another, comprise an inherently nonlinear theory which combines both the calculus of variations and geometric analysis. We study the behavior of such deformations by understanding the mathematical problems associated to their models. The main subjects we will tackle are geometric mapping problems, oscillatory properties of deformations, and convexity properties of the energy functional which governs the structure of the elastic material. In addition, a doctoral student will be hired and supervised during the project. The project also aims to broaden its impact beyond academia by collaborating with a school in Helsinki in order to provide high school students special courses regarding the use of mathematics in research and practice.
