OCT-based functional and structural biomarkers for age-related macular degeneration
Description of the granted funding
In this project we're investigating light-induced functional (and structural) responses from the retinal neurons using optical coherence tomography (OCT). The main aim is to research and quantify what is a normal functional response to the calibrated light stimulus and by using this normative data, see if the functional response differs from eyes with diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). With these functional biomarkers, we can potentially identify and diagnose diseases earlier and before there are any structural changes in OCT images or fundus photos. The research is conducted (system will be built here) in the laboratory of biophysics, which is located in the Institute of Biomedicine, University of Turku. The number of AMD patients is expected to rise drastically within the next 30 years and new treatments need novel ways to measure and quantify if the therapies are actually working as intended and if the vision is improved.
