Development and clinical validation of near infrared spectroscopy for diagnosis of tissue fibrosis (Spectro-Scan)
Description of the granted funding
Tissue fibrosis is associated with several heart and liver diseases. Early detection of tissue fibrosis and its associated organ dysfunction, which occur before clinical symptoms become apparent, can immensely increase the chances of successful treatment of heart and liver diseases. In this project, we aim to develop a ‘point-of-care' tool for surgical assessment of heart and liver fibrosis. This will provide surgeons with detailed information on the type, extent, and severity of tissue fibrosis, thereby enabling more informed treatment decision and significantly improving the treatment of several heart and liver diseases in the early stages. Ultimately, this will reduce the disease burden of cardiovascular and hepatic conditions on the socio-economy of Finland and EU. The project will be conducted at the Biomedical Spectroscopy Lab, University of Eastern Finland and involves strong international collaboration with Universities and Hospitals in Melbourne and Sydney Australia.
