A bio-inspired generator of green electricity using photosynthetic bacteria and sustainable materials (Photo-e-Mat)
Acronym
Photo-e-Mat
Description of the granted funding
The Photo-e-Mat project will generate green electricity from photosynthetic bacteria to be part of the solution to mitigating climate change and for the transition from a fossil-based economy to a sustainable circular bioeconomy. Photosynthetic bacteria have the remarkable ability to generate electricity from sunlight and water as a by-product of photosynthesis. We will harness this behaviour in biotechnologies called biophotovoltaic devices (BPVs) to generate green electricity. The Photo-e-Mat project will increase the electricity outputs from BPVs by removing electron sinks inside the photosynthetic bacteria and optimising sustainable electrode materials and architectures. We will also use the latest 3D printing techniques to fabricate our BPVs for scaling up this technology.
