Smart Tree Energy
Description of the granted funding
When the wind blows, the trees sway. What if this universal phenomenon could be harnessed by changing the energy of swaying trees for electricity? By combining microelectronics and plant physiology, the S3nergy project aims to develop a new green energy by researching energy harvesting for forest conditions. The components to be developed enable the conversion of local energies into electricity through which better monitoring of the environment by wireless measurements can be obtained even in remote locations. This enables e.g. very local wind condition monitoring and their understanding to be utilised in more precise management of cultivated forests spatially improved wind mechanics/conditions knowledge. In addition, energy harvesting enables measurements of soil, water volume, etc., which can provide valuable information for forest management, forest owners and research. The project will cooperate with the Department of Forest Sciences of the University of Eastern Finland.
