Economic and social sustainability across time and space in an ageing society
Description of the granted funding
Population ageing undermines the economic sustainability of the welfare state. To promote social sustainability we need to guarantee opportunities for well-being also in the future. In SustAgeable consortium, we analyse the synergies and trade-offs between economic and social sustainability. In our empirical multidisciplinary research we focus on 1) distribution of well-being in the society, 2) cost-containment of public spending on social and health care services, 3) opportunities to increase employment through prolonging working careers and promoting immigrants' integration, 4) management of caring responsibilities, and 5) local variations in ageing trends. In the first funding period, the consortium has produced evidence on how policies can mitigate the undesired effects of population ageing on public finances, polarisation and well-being.
