Metabolic factors as risk for periodontal disease

Description of the granted funding

Periodontitis is a multifactorial inflammatory disease of the tooth supporting structures with loss of connective tissue and alveolar bone. It has been associated, e.g., with male gender, tobacco smoking, and diabetes. The aim of this study is to investigate the association of insulin resistance and dyslipidemia with periodontal infection. In addition, the purpose is to investigate which components of metabolic syndrome are causing the association of metabolic syndrome with periodontal infection. The dataset is based on the 31- and 46-year-follow-ups of the Northern Finland Birth Cohort 1966 Study. There are a limited number of longitudinal studies in this research field. This study could clarify causality and the possible role of periodontal infection in metabolic conditions. The results are applicable to the daily clinical work of dentists and general practitioners.
