Solvent-free synthetic platform for heterogeneous cellulose-based catalysts (COFCELL)

Description of the granted funding

Poor solubility of cellulose has, so far, meant that large amounts of toxic and caustic solvents are used to convert these renewable resources to new functional materials. The COFCELL project will develop efficient and resource-concious solid-state covalent modification protocols for cellulose at Aalto University, which avoids solvent and energy waste. This provides a new platform for making high-performance porous materials, which will be used in this project to combine the permanent porosity of covalent organic frameworks and the abundancy and strength of cellulose nanofibers to make heterogeneous catalysts.
