Navigating the route to sustainable water-food futures
Acronym
Water&Food
Description of the granted funding
The project addresses challenges posed by climate change, societal shifts, and their impacts on water and food security, livelihoods, and ecosystems. It develops solutions for adapting to water and resource scarcity in crop and livestock production, evaluates the environmental impacts of diets and novel foods using life-cycle assessment, and studies comparative advantages in agri-food trade through economic models. The adaptive capacity of consumers and food system actors is assessed through surveys and interviews. Long-term global scenarios for food and water use are developed. The project aims to improve resilience to climate change, societal turbulences, and resource scarcity, using the Planetary Boundaries framework for knowledge co-creation and stakeholder engagement. The consortium includes the University of Helsinki, Aalto University, Natural Resources Institute Finland, and E2 Research.
