Towards millimetre accurate geodesy with the VLBI Global Observing System
Description of the granted funding
This project develops a production-quality data processing pipeline to be ultimately integrated into the data processing structure of the VLBI Global Observing System (VGOS), which is a new international geodetic very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) network that measures the orientation of the Earth in space and contributes to the global reference frames. VGOS radio telescopes are being built around the world, including a station in Finland, and its main goal is to increase the accuracy of the geodetic VLBI measurements by an order of magnitude, down to the millimetre level. High demands for the accuracy of monitoring global changes, such as sea-level rise, and precise real-time positioning applications are the reason for this ambitious goal, but at the moment systematic errors prevent VGOS from reaching it. The pipeline developed in this project will model the dominant source of the systematic errors in VGOS data - the radio source structure - and help to remove it.
