REACTION - Navigating the Risks of Hydroclimatic Extremes for Freshwater Ecosystem Services in Forest Landscapes
Description of the granted funding
REACTION assesses risks from hydroclimatic extremes like heatwaves, floods, droughts, and heavy rains on freshwater ecosystems in forest landscapes. The project provides user-endorsed strategies to mitigate these risks and balance water needs for people and nature. By applying a data-integrated risk framework with advanced modeling, REACTION explores data resources, co-designs indicators, and builds models that simulate interactions between extreme events and ecosystem functions. This approach quantifies hazards, exposure, and vulnerability across four European case studies. Using probabilistic risk modeling, we provide spatial insights into present and future hydroclimatic risks and collaborate with stakeholders to develop effective management strategies. Key outputs include new insights on extreme events, synthesized risk data, and tools to support stakeholder planning and resilience for freshwater ecosystem services in European forest landscapes.
