PolyTree - Polyesters from wood-based building blocks

Description of the granted funding

This project aims to solve several problems related to current generation and use of plastics. Firstly, there is a need to substitute fossilbased polymers with renewables ones. Secondly, these renewable polymers need to be stronger than currently available biopolymers and ideally, match the technical properties of fossil-based polymers. Thirdly, the plastic waste must be reduced radically. In this project, renewable polyesters with properties approaching those of fossil-based industrialized polymers will be synthesized from wood-based raw material, which originates from forest industry. These polyesters will be further tailored to meet application-specific technical requirements during its lifetime. The recycling and end-of life of the manufactured polymers will also preliminary be studied. Finally, critical evaluation of possibilities in value chains and scaleup will be carried out.
