Towards carbon neutral construction materials: prerequisites and impacts of increasing use of wood-based materials and their circulation in the building sector
Description of the granted funding
Sustainable forest management, long-lived wood products, and circular economy together can create a growing carbon sink and storage. However, the transition to bio- and circular economy is causing pressure on the use of renewable resources. Over-harvesting can be avoided by balancing the use of commercial forests. Carbon sinks and storage can be increased by producing long-lived wood products, increasing circulation and cascading of wood materials, and developing composite materials. Building sector provides excellent opportunities to apply all these solutions. This project examines these possibilities and paves the way for carbon neutral construction. Int he project, current building stock and new construction targets are modeled with a business-as-usual and wood construction options. The barriers and drivers are studied by interviewing different actors in the building process. The economic and climate impacts areanalysed at the societal level across supply and value chains
