Biochemical and Imaging Diagnostics of Traumatic Brain Injury: Focus on the Subacute and Chronic Phase (BID-TBI 2)
Description of the granted funding
Biochemical and Imaging Diagnostics of Traumatic Brain Injury: Focus on the Subacute and Chronic Phase (BID-TBI2) is a translational research project focusing on the subacute (days-weeks) and chronic (months-years) phases of traumatic brain injury (TBI). TBI is a major public health problem worldwide: more than 50 million people suffer TBI each year, and about half of the world's population will suffer one or more TBIs over their lifetime. After TBI, some people develop a progressive brain disease for which there are no treatment options - even diagnostic methods are inadequate. In this project, patients will be examined using comprehensive biochemical, imaging, and microbiome assessments. The expected research outcomes are to develop objective methods to identify patients with progressive brain damage following TBI and to identify microbiome-gut-brain connections associated with the long-term consequences of TBI, thereby identifying potential intervention targets.
