Building Blocks of Turbulence
Description of the granted funding
 Turbulence remains an unsolved complex non-linear problem in the field of physics. During the project, I will develop new methods to study the foundations of turbulent processes in idealized laboratory setting, utilizing a Bose-Einstein condensate. This choice simplifies the problem under study because any flow pattern is a sum of contributions from identical microscopic whorls. I will construct a turbulent state from the smallest possible building blocks and identify the dominant processes in a turbulent cascade by sculpting the shape of individual whorls at will using modern light-shaping technology. The foundations established by this project can be utilized for describing turbulence on a more general level. The project has the potential to generate scientific and societal impact from improved weather prediction to aerodynamics. The site of research is Aalto University.
