eXciton-Secured High-Intensity Emission and Long Durability
Description of the granted funding
We consume more than 20 % of the total electric power generated in lights, consequently producing a colossal 400 million metric tons of CO2 annually. The need for more efficient light sources has driven the blossoming of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) research and technology. However, inorganic LEDs have negative environmental impacts. They contain rare earth and toxic heavy metal traces that become significant quantities when mass-produced. Organic LEDs (OLEDs) have emerged as a promising alternative. Unlike inorganic LEDs, OLEDs can be fabricated using energy-efficient processes and environmentally friendly materials, offering a solution to the hazardous environmental issues associated with LEDs. However, the limited brightness and operational lifespan of OLEDs currently restrict their use in TVs and mobile devices. X-SHIELD aims to address the performance and longevity challenges of OLEDs, paving the way for their broader adoption.
