Determination of full pitch-angle distributions of solar energetic particle events using artificial intelligence

Acronym

AIPAD

Description of the granted funding

AIPAD is an exciting, cutting-edge project that merges spacecraft data with artificial intelligence (AI) to unlock the mysteries of solar energetic particle (SEP) events. These explosive solar eruptions accelerate high-energy particles that can disrupt GPS systems and pose serious risks to astronauts. While solar flares and shocks are known to drive these events, their relative contributions to SEP acceleration remain a puzzle. AIPAD tackles this by developing innovative AI algorithms to infer full SEP pitch-angle distributions (PADs) and predict energy spectra, revealing the underlying processes of SEP generation. This breakthrough approach will not only deepen our understanding of space weather but also transform future space weather prediction tools, advance instrument design, and enhance our ability to protect modern technology and human health in space.
