Spatio-temporal dynamics of degrading palsa mires and their greenhouse gas fluxes across Fennoscandia

Description of the granted funding
The aim of this project is to connect the life cycle phases and seasonal variation of permafrost palsas to the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of these ecosystems. Our mission is to bridge traditional field measurements with novel remote sensing approaches, as we believe this is the next step forward to quantify the carbon and nitrogen cycle during permafrost dynamics. The project enhances the understanding of the spatially varying biogeochemical processes occuring in palsa mires. This is further facilitated by using sensors mounted on Unoccupied Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and by satellite imagery. GHG flux measurements with chambers and a micrometeorological tower add a new component to permafrost monitoring, the latter providing continuous, long-term data. The extensive monitoring and spatial up- and downscaling serve as essential reference information for climate feedback and carbon and nitrogen cycle modelling, which is also included in the project.
