Polymeric Rationally Designed CO2 Adsorbents

Description of the granted funding

With the current rate of greenhouse gas emissions, the allowed amount of carbon dioxide to keep global warming below 1.5 °C will be exceeded in less than 10 years. Therefore, it seems unlikely that net-zero CO2 emissions will be reached in time and thus direct removal carbon dioxide from air will be needed. This project will build a rational approach for designing advanced materials for CO2 removal to improve the cost and efficiency of direct air capture (DAC). The goal will be reached by a multidisciplinary consortium that combines experiments with computational studies. A hierarchical approach to understand the aspects of the adsorbents, with each step contributing to the properties of the final adsorbent. The performance of synthesized adsorbents will be tested experimentally and through modelling to find their real performance. Special focus will be on long-term stability of the adsorbents to maximize the amount of CO2 captured during the adsorbent lifetime.
