Host-microbiota coevolution under fluctuating temperatures

Description of the granted funding

This project investigates how organisms can adapt to the increasing frequency of heatwaves caused by climate change. We use an insect model, Drosophila simulans fruit flies to understand how organisms withstand random environmental changes. We study the effects of temperature fluctuations on individual adaptability and phenotypic plasticity, as well as the role of gut microbiota in this process. The experiments include different temperature fluctuation scenarios, experimental evolution, and microbiota transplants. The results will help us understand biological adaptation and flexibility in a changing climate, with potential applications in industry, agriculture, and medicine.
