Mechanisms of actin-regulated transcription
Description of the granted funding
Transcription enables the expression of correct genes at correct places, and is hence a fundamental process for every cell. This project focuses on MRTF transcription factors, which control the expression of cytoskeletal and muscle-specific genes, and are therefore important, for example, for cell migration and muscle contraction. Moreover, MRTF transcription factors are deregulated in many diseases, such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Together with our international collaborators, we will use state-of-the-art methodology to reveal the molecular mechanisms that regulate the activity of MRTFs and reveal their significance for heart muscle differentiation. Understanding the basic mechanisms that underlie crucial biological processes, such as how transcription factors operate in the cells, underlies our ability to develop efficient therapeutic strategies and diagnostic tools to combat various diseases.
