Determinants and consequences of development in language and communication (DLD-Global)

Description of the granted funding

Developmental language disorder (DLD) affects 7.5 % of children, which means that these children have severe challenges in language acquisition. Language is the principal method of human communication, and it would be essential to understand why someone develops DLD and how to prevent it. In DLD-Global, we investigate the determinants, trajectories, and mechanisms leading to DLD in two international specialist longitudinal cohorts (HelSLI and ELVS) with cutting-edge methodology in machine learning and network analysis. Our results improve early prediction, identification, and prevention globally across languages and cultures. DLD-Global enhances our understanding of the roots of DLD, but this knowledge can also help those struggling with other developmental and learning challenges. Our results will advance clinical practices and mitigate the consequences of DLD. This way, DLD-Global promotes equality and tackles social challenges so that all can achieve their full potential.
