Statistical models and monitoring designs to assess spatiotemporal dynamics of species

Acronym

Stat4BioMon

Description of the granted funding

To implement biodiversity promoting policies we need quantitative information on how biodiversity is changing and what are the drivers of this change. However, we still lack tools to cost-efficiently produce such information. With this project, we will tackle this challenge by developing novel statistical methods and data collection designs. First, we will develop novel models for seasonal dynamics in population distributions. Second, we will develop robust statistical methods for integrating datasets of different types into joint estimate of a population change. Finally, we will generate novel understanding on the cost-effectiveness of alternative monitoring designs and types of data in estimating and predicting biodiversity change. As a result, we will make groundbreaking impact on the statistical methods and knowledge on how biodiversity should be monitored and, through that, provide new tools urgently needed for a transformative change towards an ecologically sustainable society.
