Enhanced Wood Tracing Systems for Sustainable Forestry and Improved Wood Utilization

Acronym

Tracing4Wood

Description of the granted funding

Efficient use of forest biomass requires accurate information about wood quality, which determines its end use. This project investigates laser scanning and imaging methods to reconstruct tree architectures throughout their lifecycle, establish links between harvested trees and the resulting sawlogs, and monitor their further processing into various timber products. It does so by combining advanced sensors and computational solutions across the value chain. Improved tree-to-board traceability provides information about wood origin and enables the linking of standing tree structures to wood quality properties, thereby supporting the sustainable use of forest resources. The project is carried out as a joint effort between the Forest-Human-Machine Interplay (UNITE) and Advanced Mathematics for Sensing, Imaging and Modelling (FAME) flagships, utilizing the unique Technologies for Measuring Forests Research Infrastructure (ScanForest) and strong industry connections.
