Sustainable hydropower via hybrid cluster operation and hydrological forecasts under uncertainties
Acronym
UOULUSYKE-hp
Description of the granted funding
Hydropower is a steady, reliable, flexible and renewable source of energy, with very low emissions during the entire life cycle. It has a significant role in the energy system in providing regulating and reserve power for the electric power system, enabling also the introduction of an increased share of low-emission intermittent electricity production. Hydropower is a limited and valuable resource; hence a careful analysis-based design is required on when and how to use it. This research proposal takes a systemic view on hydro power, with special focus on its analysis in the grid frequency control, and optimization of lake and reservoir regulation considering also flood protection and ecological requirements as well as hydrological forecast uncertainty, aiming to enhance the role of hydropower in the sustainable energy solutions of the future.
