Randomized infancy-onset dietary intervention trial to prevent atherosclerosis (The STRIP Study).
Description of the granted funding
The aim of this project is to test if coronary atherosclerosis could be prevented by lowering LDL cholesterol levels in childhood by dietary intervention. The STRIP Study is a unique trial in which approximately 1,000 infants were randomly assigned to intervention and control groups in the early 1990s. For 20 years, the intervention group received individualized nutritional counseling to reduce the proportion of saturated fats in their diet. The diet proved to be safe and resulted in a reduction in LDL cholesterol levels in the intervention group. The participants are now 36 years of age. We will examine them using coronary computed tomography imaging to determine whether the dietary intervention has reduced the development coronary atherosclerosis.
