Conflicting Temporalities in Transitions: Urban Industrial Heritage Encountering Green Deal Futures
Description of the granted funding
The project examines the temporal tension between industrial heritage and the green transition: how local experiences of industrial heritage encounter the deadlines of green policies. We explore this tension across local, national, and European levels, focusing on the agency of cities as part of broader national and international contexts. The study focuses on three Finnish industrial heritage cities (Pori, Tampere, and Varkaus), compared globally via international collaboration. The project PI is Prof. of International History Marjaana Niemi (Tampere University) and the research is conducted at the Universities of Tampere and Helsinki. The examination of spatial-temporal tensions opens new perspectives on just industrial and ecological transitions and develops methods for analysing the relationship between time and space. The results support the development of transition policies by offering insights into the temporal and spatial governance of sustainable and just transformation.
