The Green Reshuffle: occupational recognition during the green transition and its political consequences

Description of the granted funding

The green transition affects various citizen groups unequally. Research focuses on this transformation's economic inequalities but overlooks how it also alters society's valuation of different occupations (i.e. occupational recognition). Such changes affect how individuals view their social standing which is politically consequential. The project contributes to scientific literature by studying changes in occupational recognition during the green transition in advanced democracies and their impact on citizen support for climate policies and parties pursuing them. It first conceptualises occupational recognition during the green transition and its political consequences. Next, it examines this concept cross-nationally and then studies it in-depth via original interviews and surveys conducted in Finland. The findings will suggest if public policies should address both economic inequality and unequal occupational recognition from the green transition to strengthen public support for it.
