Ancient roads in Western Amazonia (version Dec. 2024)

Description

These data were used in preparing the manuscript: 'Ancient Earthwork Roads in Southwestern Amazonia Unveil Ceremonial, Livelihood, and Networking Significances'. The roads in the area abound with more than a thousand ancient earthworks. They were visually identified using open-access satellite imagery and critically evaluated by X and Y by Martti Pärssinen and Risto Kalliola. Roads are remarkably straight. They can lead to the river, connect to nearby earthworks or just fade away in open landscape Because roads originate from various time periods, their relevance must be evaluated across multiple distinct archaeological phases. Ancient roads in Western Amazonian lowlands represent invaluable archaeological heritage.
