W-11 preview
Description
Sample W11 is a garnet-mica schist collected from the northwest Himalayas, Pakistan. The garnet porphyroblasts preserve spectacular spiral inclusion trails. The purpose of scanning this sample was to virtually deduce the Foliation Intersection Axis (FIA) orientation from the spiral inclusion trails. Traditionally, this was achieved by cutting at least 8 oriented thin sections from a rock sample in the thin section preparation lab, which is a time consuming, tedious and destructive procedure. We determined the FIA non-destructively for this sample and, hence, an efficient way of micro-structural analysis down to the micron scale. Platetest scans were done to see the effect of low energy on a plate-like object.
