FERMAID preview
Description
Collective preview entry for the FERMAID project.
FERMAID is a project that investigates the effects of climate and human action on the ecosystem of Baltic Sea during the last 7000 years through the geochemical composition and magnetic properties of iron manganese precipitates. Iron manganese precipitates are discs that consist of iron and manganese oxides that are relatively common in the seabed of coastal areas. The project will produce proxy data with 3-20 year accuracy using mass spectrometer microanalysis, mineral magnetic studies and microbiological analysis. The project will also determine the amount of metals and nutrients that could potentially be released from the iron manganese precipitates to the sea as an effect of global warming, eutrophication and increased lack of oxygen.
Tomography data was mainly collected to interpret the internal structure of the precipitates and to choose samples for microanalytic methods.
