Secondary-aged learners' practices for information seeking and evaluation in formal and informal environments

Description

Interviews with students The data collected in the CogAHealth project funded by the Academy of Finland consist of, among other data, transcripts of interviews with secondary school students (Grades 8, 9, and 10) in northern Finland. The interviews (N8 = 17, N9 = 16, N10 = 4) were semi-structured, based on tailored interview frameworks, focusing on either Well-being and health of Information practices related to health information. The latter concerned information needs as well as information seeking and evaluation; information sources (media, channels; books, magazines, online sources, persons etc.) the interviewees use and how they evaluate the credibility of information. The interviewed students were asked about how health education was studied at school, e.g. classroom practices and employed information sources. The 9 Graders were also asked about their shared experiences of multiliteracy practices implemented in the context of documentary video production, task engagement and information seeking as well as potential positive impact of group work for their learning. The student participants were interviewed in groups of two, excluding two that appeared, due to their schedule, to take place in single or triadic setting. The interview data consist of eight interviews with 8 Graders, eight interviews with 9 Graders, and two interviews with 10 Graders, in total with 19 girls and 18 boys. The interviewed 8 Graders filled in a small-scale survey, examining their health information practices, namely the EHIL tool (Everyday-life Health Information Literacy Screening tool). Their reponses were discussed in the interviews implemented by Research dyad 1, while they served as the basis of the interviews. In turn, the interviews implemented by Researcher dyad 2 followed the interview framework. The sequence of the interview themes varied but they were all discussed in each interview. The average length of the interviews was 33 minutes, returning 12 A4 pages of transcription on average. The interviews were transcribed in verbatim, excluding expletives. Interviews with teachers The interview data includes also interviews with three teachers from secondary schools in northern Finland, implemented after the observed projects. The interviewed teachers were asked to reflect their project, their pedagogy in health education and their conceptions about their students' understanding about and practices of health information. The average length of teacher interviews was 60 minutes, returning approximately 20 A4 pages. The interviews were transcribed in verbatim, excluding expletives. The publication/ anonymisation of the teacher interviews will be considered as soon as they will be reported by our research group.
