Gulf of Finland sediment preview

Description

The cores were collected using a long piston corer onboard r/v Aranda in August-September 2019 from the western Gulf of Finland. The cores captured brackish-water mud of the Baltic Sea, covering the past 2-3 millennia. In addition to 3D tomography, the cores were analysed at each centimetre for loss-on-ignition, magnetic susceptibility and multielement content using a handheld XRF. The aim was to characterize the long-term development of the local sedimentary environment during the past millennia, in particular the near-bottom water exchange between the central deep areas of the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland. The results will be published in a MSc thesis. Included in the dataset are three long cores imaged in multiple segments with missing data in between segments and one higher resolution (HR) and one higher voltage (HV) scan from one core segment.
